根据第二段中“Most of their trips, most of which are far from the hot spots recommended by travel guidebooks, seem more rigorous than leisurely — heritage study in the Mongolian deserts, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb of three English summits and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.(他们的大部分旅行都远离旅游指南推荐的热门景点,似乎比在蒙古沙漠中学习遗产、在新西兰徒步旅行53公里、在英国攀登三座山峰一天以及从北京到莫斯科的六天火车旅行等悠闲的旅行要严格得多)”和第三段中“Real travel may be hard, uncertain, uncomfortable(真正的旅行可能是艰难的、不确定的、不舒服的)”可知,他们的很多旅行是具有挑战性的;根据倒数第二段中“These experiences certainly shaped their sons’ characters and influenced their chosen study at university. One read world history, the other international relations. The two brothers also share an interest in historical monuments, and the Great Wall in particular.(这些经历无疑塑造了他们儿子的性格,并影响了他们选择在大学学习。一个读世界历史,另一个读国际关系。这两兄弟还对历史遗迹,尤其是长城很感兴趣)”可知,这些旅行经历对孩子来说有教育意义,故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but that experience of the world outside, in distant lands, with different languages, scripts, political structures, and religious beliefs, is the real testing ground.(Lindesay非常重视课堂外的学习,他说,孩子们可能在学校考试中取得好成绩,但在遥远的地方,在不同的语言、文字、政治结构和宗教信仰的外部世界的经历,才是真正的试验场)”和第五段中“Wu asked her sons to write travel diaries, collect tickets, draw maps and summarize travel tips. She says such habits, though they might not directly improve test scores, will pay dividends in later life.(Wu让她的儿子们写旅行日记,收集车票,绘制地图,总结旅行小贴士。她说,这样的习惯虽然可能不会直接提高考试成绩,但会在以后的生活中带来好处)”可知,这对夫妇认为旅行能提供真正的教育,故选B。

词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Wu asked her sons to write travel diaries, collect tickets, draw maps and summarize travel tips.(Wu让她的儿子们写旅行日记,收集车票,绘制地图,总结旅行小贴士)”可知,Wu让儿子这样做应是对他们有好处,结合画线词所在句中“She says such habits, though they might not directly improve test scores (她说,这样的习惯虽然可能不会直接提高考试成绩)”中though表达的让步语气可知,此处指这样的习惯虽然可能不会直接提高考试成绩,但会在以后的生活中带来好处,pay dividends意为“带来好处”,故选A。
根据第四段“Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but that experience of the world outside, in distant lands, with different languages, scripts, political structures, and religious beliefs, is the real testing ground.(Lindesay非常重视课堂外的学习,他说,孩子们可能在学校考试中取得好成绩,但在遥远的地方,在不同的语言、文字、政治结构和宗教信仰的外部世界的经历,才是真正的试验场)”和最后一段中“My parents view the world as a big classroom, and my brother and I are the biggest beneficiaries(我的父母把世界看作一个大教室,我和哥哥是最大的受益者)”可知,Lindesay非常重视课堂外的学习,让孩子们在旅行中受益,故这家人的故事告诉我们“读万卷书不如行万里路”,故选D。

根据第三段中“The horses correctly identified their present keeper and ignored the stranger’s face about 75% of the time, significantly better than chance.(这些马正确地认出了他们现在的饲养员,并在75%的情况下忽略了陌生人的脸,这显著地好于偶然)”和倒数第二段中“What’s more, the horses also preferentially picked photos of their previous keeper — a person they hadn’t seen in six months.(更重要的是,这些马还会优先选择它们以前的饲养员的照片——一个它们已经六个月没见过的人)”可知,马非常熟悉自己的饲养员,大概率能认出现在的甚至以前的饲养员的脸。 故选A项。

In the future, human drivers will be sharing the road with autonomous vehicles. The transition to autonomous vehicles is progressing with each passing year and humans are no longer the only ones sitting behind an automobile’s steering wheel. This makes it urgent for traffic lights with a fourth color to become a reality.
根据文章第三段“The white traffic light would be equipped with wireless Bluetooth technology and would engage when the number of autonomous vehicles driving on the road at any given time exceeds a certain threshold (阈值). Autonomous vehicles would be in communication with each other and with the traffic lights at intersections, within a certain range. Any human drivers in the mix would be informed to follow the lead of the vehicle in front of them via the white light: stop if it stops, continue if it continues.(白色交通灯将配备无线蓝牙技术,当任何时间行驶在道路上的自动驾驶车辆数量超过一定阈值时,它就会启动。在一定范围内,自动驾驶汽车可以相互通信,也可以与十字路口的交通灯通信。车辆中的任何人类驾驶员都将被告知通过白灯跟随前面车辆的指示:如果它停下来,就停下来,如果它继续行驶,就继续行驶。)”可知,第三段主要介绍了白色交通灯运行的原理,故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段 “The white light can be used to coordinate (协调) traffic in any situation involving autonomous vehicles and tells human drivers what’s going on, so that they know what they are supposed to do as they approach the intersection,” says civil engineer Ali Hajbabaie.(土木工程师Ali Hajbabaie说:“在任何涉及自动驾驶汽车的情况下,白色交通灯都可以用来协调交通,并告诉人类司机正在发生什么,这样他们就知道在接近十字路口时应该怎么做。”) 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“As an example, most recently, Tesla’s problematic full-self-driving vehicles have been at the forefront of public criticism after a car crashed into a fire truck. Consequently, the potential risks linked to autonomous driving are what made North Carolina State University researchers suggest adding a fourth color to traffic lights in the coming years.(举个例子,最近,一辆特斯拉全自动驾驶汽车撞上一辆消防车后,成为公众批评的焦点。因此,与自动驾驶相关的潜在风险促使北卡罗来纳州立大学的研究人员建议在未来几年为交通信号灯增加第四种颜色。)”可知,文章举特斯拉的例子,是为了证明下文,也就是增加白色交通信号灯的必要性。故选B。

Chinese people’s reading habits
The chart about Chinese people’s reading rates shows that digital reading is more popular than reading printed materials, with close to 70% of people choosing digital materials.
At least two main reasons can be identified to account for the phenomenon. First, the popularity of digital materials makes it convenient and affordable for people to download and read them on the Internet. Besides, with digital devices easy to carry around, people can enjoy the fun of reading anytime anywhere on digital devices.
Personally, no matter which reading method, online or traditional, people should be encouraged to read more and incorporate more traditional reading into their lives, like visiting the library and participating in book exchange activities. Once people develop the habit of reading, their enjoyment will grow, one page at a time.

I looked at the flyers on the wall carefully this time — it was definitely the cat I had back at home! Then the truth of the situation hit me — I had stolen a little boy’s cat! I tried to justify why I should keep the kitten by convincing myself the owners deserved to lose him. Now I saw that it was all a big mistake. I approached the little boy in the wheelchair. He blew his nose and looked up at me. “I have your kitten,” I told him. “I’m sorry. I just found him and fed him. He’s at my house.”
The little boy began to cry with laughter. He held his arms out and gave me a big hug. “Thank you so much! I was just about to put a new collar on him when he ran out the door. I couldn’t chase him because of my legs ...” I then ran home to get the kitten and reunited the owner and his pet finally. I once thought for sure the kitten’s owners deserved to lose him; yet in the end, I was the one who didn’t deserve to keep the kitten.

Are you looking for the best war books Take a look at a few titles you need to add to your list!
The Art of War, by Sun Tzu
2
{#{QQABLYSAggigABAAAAgCEwWSCEMQkAEAACoGRFAAoAABwANABAA=}#}
The Art of War was published thousands of years ago, which dates back to the earliest days of the
Chinese Empire. It is a comprehensive military masterpiece that discusses the basics of war,
covering everything from basic battle preparation to military supply and how to win a battle before
it is even fought. Therefore, it remains one of the most important war books even in the modern
era.
War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy
War and Peace is widely known as one of the greatest war novels, focusing on the age of Napoleon.
At the time, Napoleon had already conquered the vast majority of Western Europe and rounded up
his allies to invade Russia. This novel illustrates how Russia was able to turn back the tide of the
French invasion and preserved its land during the Battle of Borodino.
For Whom the Bell Tolls , by Ernest Hemingway
Before Ernest Hemingway became a famous author, he served as an ambulance driver in the Great
War. Based on the experience, he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls, which is about Robert Jordan, a
volunteer with a republican guerilla (游击队 ) unit during the Spanish Civil War. This book
provides an inside look at what it is like to serve in a major conflict and its impact on individuals.
The Iliad, by Homer
If you want to read a classic, consider checking out The Iliad, the best epic tales of all time. While
there have been many legends about the Fall of Troy, it is the only one that probes into the horrors
of war, painting a vivid picture of the adrenaline, stress, and action of combat.
21. What do we know about The Art of War
A. It sets the story in the Spanish Civil War.
B. It talks about the fundamentals of war.
C. It has been recognized as an epic tale.
D. It is read only by army commanders.
22. Which book well depicts the battle where Russia turned potential failure into victory
A. The Art of War. B. For Whom the Bell Tolls.
C. War and Peace. D. The Iliad.
23. Who might be most interested in the four recommended books
A. War book lovers. B. Novel readers.
C. Critical thinkers. D. Average people.

William Lindesay, renowned Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have
traveled across the globe by the back paths, providing their sons Jimmy and Tommy a unique
environment for personal growth.
Sunhats, backpacks, sneakers and trekking poles — these are the day-to-day must-haves of the
3
{#{QQABLYSAggigABAAAAgCEwWSCEMQkAEAACoGRFAAoAABwANABAA=}#}
family. This East-meets-West couple started traveling while their younger son was still in nappies
in 2003. Most of their trips, most of which are far from the hot spots recommended by travel
guidebooks, seem more rigorous than leisurely — heritage study in the Mongolian deserts, a
53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb of three English summits and a six-day
train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
“Real travel may be hard, uncertain, uncomfortable, but there’s a feel-good factor when you pass a
test of some kind,” Lindesay wrote in the family’s newly published travel memoir Pages of
Discovery.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might
score well on school tests, but that experience of the world outside, in distant lands, with different
languages, scripts, political structures, and religious beliefs, is the real testing ground.
Children in this international family did not have the same pressure to perform on school tests, but
they had “homework” on the road. Wu asked her sons to write travel diaries, collect tickets, draw
maps and summarize travel tips. She says such habits, though they might not directly improve test
scores, will pay dividends in later life.
These experiences certainly shaped their sons’ characters and influenced their chosen study at
university. One read world history, the other international relations. The two brothers also share an
interest in historical monuments, and the Great Wall in particular. They are now planning to follow
in their father’s footsteps with a new 4,500-km hike on the Great Wall.
“My parents view the world as a big classroom, and my brother and I are the biggest beneficiaries,”
Jimmy says.
24. Which of the following best describes their trips across the world
A. Hard and risky. B. Unique yet stressful.
C. Challenging and educational. D. Leisurely yet rewarding.
25. What can we infer about the couple from the text
A. They think little of school education.
B. They believe travel provides real education.
C. They ask their sons to follow their career path.
D. They require their sons to perform well on school tests.
26. What do the underlined words “pay dividends” mean in paragraph 5
A. Bring advantages. B. Pay a price.
C. Improve scores. D. Make mistakes.
27. What does the family’s story tell us
A. Good company on the road is the shortest cut.
B. Good habits formed at youth make all the difference.

We can recognize our friends’ faces. Many social animals can also identify individuals of their own
species by their facial features. That’s important, because they need to be able to adjust their
behavior depending on who they meet. And research has shown that some species of monkeys,
birds, and domesticated (驯养的) animals can even distinguish among different faces by looking at
photographs alone.
Scientists have also wondered whether domesticated animals that have coexisted with people for
thousands of years can recognize different human faces. Léa Lansade of France’s National
Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment is one of them. Her experiment on
horses provides insight into this.
She and her team first taught the horses how to “choose” between two side-by-side images by
touching their noses to a computer screen. The horses were then shown photos of their present
keeper alongside faces of unfamiliar humans. They had never seen photos of any of the people
before. The horses correctly identified their present keeper and ignored the stranger’s face about
75% of the time, significantly better than chance.
What’s more, the horses also preferentially picked photos of their previous keeper — a person they
hadn’t seen in six months. In fact, even though the horses didn’t get it right every single time, they
were at least as accurate in picking out their previous keeper as they were in identifying their
present one. The results suggest that not only can horses distinguish between familiar and
unfamiliar human faces, but they know that photographs are two-dimensional representations of
real life, without any other clues like sound. And they’re even better at this than our oldest animal
companion, the domestic dog.
So maybe think twice before doing anything at a stable (马厩) that might give a horse a long face.
After all, the horse could probably “remember” you.
28. Which one of the following is true about social animals
A. They can only tell different faces of human beings.
B. Their behavior remains unchanged whoever they meet.
C. They can recognise faces of those that are familiar to them.
D. They can identify anyone based on their facial expressions.
29. What did the researchers want to find out through the study
A. To compare the photos of different types of domesticated animals.
B. To prove the ability of domesticated animals to distinguish human faces.
C. To show the possibility of keeping and training domesticated animals.
5
{#{QQABLYSAggigABAAAAgCEwWSCEMQkAEAACoGRFAAoAABwANABAA=}#}
D. To stress the importance of identifying faces of different domesticated animals.
30. What do we know about the horses in the experiment
A. They were better at identifying their present keepers.
B. Their performance was not as good as domestic dogs.
C. They could always correctly pick out their previous keepers.
D. They were aware of the relationship between real life and image.
31. Which of the following person is more likely to be “remembered” by a horse
A. People who work in the stables. B. People who have long faces.
C. People who look like horses. D. People who are friends of its keepers.
D
Researchers at North Carolina State University are proposing an additional white traffic light that
will act as a sign to human drivers and passengers that they should follow the lead of self-driving
vehicles moving through intersections
Driving is fundamentally changing. In the future, human drivers will be sharing the road with
autonomous vehicles. The transition to autonomous vehicles is progressing with each passing year
and humans are no longer the only ones sitting behind an automobile’s steering wheel. This makes
it urgent for traffic lights with a fourth color to become a reality.
The white traffic light would be equipped with wireless Bluetooth technology and would engage
when the number of autonomous vehicles driving on the road at any given time exceeds a certain
threshold (阈值). Autonomous vehicles would be in communication with each other and with the
traffic lights at intersections, within a certain range. Any human drivers in the mix would be
informed to follow the lead of the vehicle in front of them via the white light: stop if it stops,
continue if it continues.
In simulation (模拟 ) models, autonomous vehicles were shown to improve traffic flow on their
own. The higher the percentage of autonomous vehicles at an intersection, the faster the traffic
moved, with improvements of about 40 to 99 percent in terms of total delay reductions possible.
“The white light can be used to coordinate (协调 ) traffic in any situation involving autonomous
vehicles and tells human drivers what’s going on, so that they know what they are supposed to do
as they approach the intersection,” says civil engineer Ali Hajbabaie.
As an example, most recently, Tesla’s problematic full-self-driving vehicles have been at the
forefront of public criticism after a car crashed into a fire truck. Consequently, the potential risks
linked to autonomous driving are what made North Carolina State University researchers suggest
adding a fourth color to traffic lights in the coming years.
32. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Strict traffic rules.
6
{#{QQABLYSAggigABAAAAgCEwWSCEMQkAEAACoGRFAAoAABwANABAA=}#}
B. The upgrade of road system.
C. Increasing autonomous vehicles.
D. The high cost of self-driving technology.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the white traffic light
A. Its signal meaning. B. Its working principle.
C. Its complex database. D. Its potential applications.
34. What does Ali Hajbabaie convey in his words
A. The white traffic light can help improve the flow of traffic.
B. Autonomous vehicles are potential threats to road safety.
C. It is difficult for elderly drivers to adapt to white traffic lights.
D. People had to be trained before driving on the roads with white traffic lights.
35. Why does the author mention the example of Tesla in the last paragraph
A. To stress the popularity of driverless vehicles.
B. To prove the necessity of adding white traffic lights.
C. To call on the public to pay close attention to road safety.
D. To present the hidden dangers of using white traffic lights.

I found the kitten sitting on the front step of our house. He was black and white and looked
quite weak. Where did he come from I noticed he had no collar around his neck. Who would be
so irresponsible
I went inside and opened a can of fish. After I placed the can in the doorway, the kitten
hungrily lapped it up and then walked right inside the house. Later, after jumping onto a bunch of
pillows on the couch, he began to groom his hair.
I bet his last owners didn’t love him at all! I thought. If someone can’t take care of their kitten,
they deserve to lose him! Our family never owned pets, but I had always wanted one. It’s a good

The kitten kept meowing quite a lot. And then, it started trying to bite my hand.
“Hey, kitten! I’m not food!” I said. But the kitten tried again to bite my finger. I knew I had to
get him some proper cat food. “You stay put, kitten!” I told him. “I’m going to get you food!” Then
I grabbed my keys and headed out to the pet store nearest to our house.
On my way to the store, I spotted a sign on the telephone pole:
LOST KITTEN-Black and White, very friendly. If you find him, please call us.
“If you were so worried about your kitten,” I thought, “maybe you should have taken better
care of him!”
When I walked into the pet store, I found that the place was packed with kids handing out
flyers about the same cat to customers inside. In the back of the store, I saw a boy under 10 years
old, crying in his wheelchair. “I can’t believe I lost my kitten!” he said to his parents.
