Alexander Graham Bell was born in Britain in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Several members of his family did a great deal to encourage him in the field of science. His family was interested in teaching people to speak. Both his grandfather and father trained him in public speaking and teaching the deaf to speak. Bell was interested in helping the deaf, for his mother was deaf. With hope for a better life, he moved to Canada with his family in1870, and then settled
(定居) in the United States a year later.
Bell’s interest in educating deaf people led him to invent his “electrical speech machine”—the telephone in 1876. On March 10, 1876, Bell sent the world’s first telephone message to his helper, Thomas Watson, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want you.” It took forty weeks to get the telephone to carry the sound of human talk. The telephone used a transmitter(送话器), a receiver and wires. News of his invention quickly spread throughout the country, and even to Europe. The next year Bell set up the Bell Telephone Company. Five years later, in 1882, Bell became an American citizen(公民).

With online booksellers and e-readers becoming popular, traditional booksellers seem to be dying out. But is it true Many bookstores are now trying everything to make more readers who enjoy staying there to read or choose books they like. And some of them have done a great job.
Usually, online stores have a larger number of books than traditional bookstores. Some traditional ones are clever enough to sell just one kind of book and win the hearts of a specific
(特定的)group of people, Trends Lounge in Beijing is such a place for art lovers. The bookstore
has walls of books which are about arts and artists. You may meet famous artists there or maybe
even a happy couple that choose to get married in the bookstore.
Some other bookstores are trying to make themselves more than just a place that sells books. They want to be somewhere for people to take part in social activities. They may have spaces including clothes stores, cafes and tea houses and also holds lots of activities on reading, such as talking with famous writers.
Some bookstores even go one step further. They themselves have become symbols of the city culture by showing the local culture of the city where they are. For example, Hong Kong has many second-floor bookstores because the books in these stores are much cheaper. The bookstores are small, but their books are carefully chosen by the owners, just like the city of Hong Kong.
It's true that a great bookstore can make people enjoy reading in many ways. After all, reading online can’t bring you the touch of paper, the smell of print, and the strong feeling that you are going on a wonderful journey with each new book in a bookstore. Paper books give people more different reading experience than e-books. Harvard did a research last year that found out reading from an e-book at night makes a big difference to your ability to sleep and among other things. When reading a book the paper kind, one can memorize and understand better than reading on an e-reader . So come to enjoy the beauty of real books in the bookstore!
What are many traditional bookstores trying to do recently .
To discover more books which are about arts and artists.
To take the place of the online booksellers and e-readers.
To make children know more about the traditional culture.
To make more readers read or choose books in the bookstores.
How do the bookstores attract readers’ attention
Many bookstores sell different kinds of books online.
Some bookstores hold lots of social activities on reading.
Many second-floor bookstores appear around the world.
Some bookstores offer free coffee or tea for the readers.
What’s the writer’s purpose of the last paragraph
To encourage people to read paper books.
To introduce the advantage of bookstores.
To advise people to read books before sleep.
To provide people with useful reading methods.
D
What makes you happy What could change your sad face into a happy smile Your success
Perhaps. But how about working in some creativity in your everyday life
An article from Huffington Post gave an example that a recent New Zealand study says that taking part in creative activities helps to get an increase in positive feelings and moods, happiness and health in mind, and feelings of active life. According to Carolyn Gregoire of Huffington Post, “Anyone who finds time for creative hobbies like writing diaries, drawing, doing handwork or playing musical instruments is likely to get the same effect. And what’s more, you don’t have to be a singer, dancer, writer, or painter. Anyone can be creative in their own way.”
Similarly, the Pacific Standard Magazine showed a study at the University of North Carolina on college students, and it says that “those who reported feeling happy and active were more
likely to be doing something creative.” Tom Jacob of Pacific Standard Magazine says, “You don’t have to be a master. Even if the results of one’s creative activity are not perfect, they still play an important role in positive development in mind.”
So, really, it doesn’t matter if your creativity means cooking something new for dinner, or decorating your bedroom. What matters is that you’re doing something creative.
What is the importance of creativity in everyday life It’s simple. Trying to be creative each day helps us keep a healthy lifestyle, so it helps us in our journey to health.
Research says that people who have been ill for a long time are likely to express how they feel about their illnesses if they are doing something creative. Through this, they can also share their life story with others. Through sharing their experiences, they will be able to feel better and happier about their situation.
Studies say that being involved in creative activities will help you fight down worry and sadness. Scientists have been studying several forms of creative activities through the years, and they found out that activities like cooking, art, music, and even doing crossword puzzles all have health benefits.
When you’re being creative, it means you’re doing something you love or interested in. You’re not doing something because you need to or you’re forced to. And what’s a happier thing than being able to do what you really want to do Even if you make mistakes, if you are doing something you love, it doesn’t really matter.
How can people develop creativity according to a recent New Zealand study
A. By writing diaries or drawing. B. By playing football or drawing.
C. By doing housework or cooking. D. By listening to music or reading.
What does the word “master” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A person with famous studies in some areas.
A person with new researches in modern areas.
A person with excellent results in certain areas.
A person with rich knowledge in different areas.
The writer will probably agree that .
people will get a success when they are happier to do something.
people feel happier to do something creative if they are interested in it.
people can avoid mistakes when they are doing something they enjoy.
people need creativity for their job if they want to get a reward in career.
What’s the best title for this passage
A. Success and Activities. B. Creativity and Success.
C. Happiness and Success. D. Creativity and Happiness.
第二部分
本部分共 6 题,共 20 分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达(每题 2 分,共 10 分)
What are the classics Classics refer to the widely influential and authoritative(权威性的) works. No matter how long or how far it is, classics always can cross the limit of time or space and give us a wonderful power. I believe that both the East and the West have their own classics. Chinese classics are Chinese nation’s blood, and even are the foundation of Chinese culture during
thousands of years.
Why should we read Chinese classics There is no doubt that we can get a lot of benefits from reading classics. On the one hand, it is a good way for us to open our eyes and increase our knowledge in many aspects. For example, we can learn the society characters by reading classic literature novels about history or culture. On the other hand, it also provides a chance for us to increase our artistic taste because most of classics have a very beautiful or unique language style and arts, which give readers more enjoyment and interests.
However, nowadays a large number of people, especially the young, don’t want to or cannot spend their time in reading classics. There are some reasons for that. For one thing, people are distracted ( 分 心 ) easily by other things which can give them more joy and have no need in thinking, such as all kinds of entertainment activities. The other one is that some people think it is no use of reading classics because these classics are out of the time and useless to our society and lives.
In my opinion, it is wrong to consider classics are out of the time because they still have many important functions and influences on our society and our lives. Classics are a kind of treasure in a nation. Chinese culture is broad and deep, and it has a lot of energy. Reading Chinese classics, we can understand and carry forward the Chinese culture. Reading Chinese classics, we and our country can have great progress. Therefore, we should give enough attention to them. And I also strongly advise that all of us should try our best to read some of them.
