Thomas Lanier Williams was born on March 26, 1911 in the Mississippi town of Columbus In half a century. He created some of the most remarkable characters in his more than 70 plays, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Sweet Bird of Youth and The Night of the I guano.
“He changed the history of American drama with his first two plays because they were so different.” says Kenneth Holditch, editor of The Collected Plays of Tennessee Williams. “He broke free of what had been going on in the 1920s and the 1930s and gave us a wonderful understanding of human nature and human tragedy(悲剧)…”
Holditch is referring to The Glass Menagerie and Summer and Smoke. The first play won the New York Drama Critics` Circle Award for best play of 1945. It tells the story of the shy, physically disabled girl, Laura.
Williams sympathy for the underdogs grew out of his own experience. His father drank heavily and argued bitterly with his mother. When the young boy began writing poetry, he laughed at hum. In a 1973 interview, Williams told filmmaker Harry Rasky that only h s sister Rose became his closest friend.
“My sister and I were unusually close as children.” Williams recalled. “My sister and I grew so used to being company for each other that we tended to rely on each other’s companionship rather than seeking friends outside the household.”
By the time he changed his name to Tennessee and moved to New Orleans in 1939, his sister Rose became mentally ill. Tennessee was not at home when this happened, and he always felt somehow responsible for that. So he kept writing about her. The image of Rose turned up in every single play he wrote. For example, Laura in Menagerie was modeled on Rose. At the end of the pla, he wrote:”…everything reminded me of her. Perhaps it was a families’ music perhaps only a little piece of glass…”
Tennessee Williams died alone in a New York hotel room in 1983 and was buried alongs de his sister Rose.

On Tuesday, NASA sent up a test satellite from New Zealand as part of its experiment with a new orbit around the moon that it hopes to use in the coming years to land astronauts on the lunar surface. If the rest of the mission is successful. the satellite will be the first to take the new path around the moon and will send back vital information for at least six months. However, getting the 25-kilogram satellite into orbit will take more than four months and be done in three stages.
First, the small Electron rocket was launched from New Zealand Just nine minutes later, the second stage rocket called Photon separated and went into orbit around the earth
Over the next live days. Photon`s engines are scheduled to fire on a regular basis to raise its orbit further and further from the earth. Six days alter the launch. Photon’s engines ail fire a final time, allowing it to escape the earth’s orbit and head for the moon.
Finally, Photon will release the satellite, which has its own small engine that won’t much energy as it travels toward the moon over four months, with a few planned course corrections along the way.
“The new orbit seems like a stretched-out egg with one end passing close to the moon and the other lar from it.” NASA wrote on its website. “Thus path-finding satellite will be put in a sweet spot in space — where the pull of gravity from the earth and the moon interacts to allow for a stable orbit.”
NASA spokesperson Morgan Bailey said that eventually. NASA plans to put a space station called Gateway into the orbital path, from which astronauts can travel to the mon’s surface as part of its Artemis program.
“One of the advantages of the orbit is that a space station should be able to stay in continuous communication with the earth,” said Morgan Bailey. “Because it will avoid being blocked by the moon.”

On the day of the San Francisco Giants’ World Series parade(游行). I made my way to the corner of the street where I was sure I could have a good position to watch the player drive by in their cars. Then the parade started and thousands of arms extended towards the sky. And just like that, none of us could see the parade. Only our phones could.
Don’t get me wrong. I needed my phone to keep in touch with my colleagues, friends and my family. But once the parade began, my phone went from being a useful tool to being a distraction.
I knew the photos I’d take with my phone’s camera would pale in comparison to the footage I’d see on the news that night. Most importantly, I knew this gathering of thousands of people in the streets was really more about experiencing the energy than recording the visuals. All of that pre—parade analysis went out of the window once the first band marched past me. The recording device was just too close. I just couldn’t resist. I took about 40 photos and shot about 20 minutes of video. Then I stared at my phone for 30 minutes and missed the experience I was there for in the first place.
A few decades ago, my friend Isaac and I cut school and went to watch the same parade. Thus was before smartphones and neither of us had a camera. I don’t remember a single visual from that day. But I do remember the feeling. I especially remember the feeling I had after I arrived home to find my parents, who had no way of reaching me all day, wanting just inside my front door.
Of course, it is OK to take a few photos on special occasions. But it seems that we’ve developed such a fear of missing the photo opportunity that we have missed the real life moments as they pass across the two inch screens on our phones.
12. What does the underlined word “distraction” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Something that makes you feel extremely angry.
B. Something relaxing you do alter you have been working.
C. A game or an activity that provides entertainment and pleasure.
D. A thing that takes your attention away from what you want to focus on.
13. What had the author planned to do before he went to the parade
A. Keep his phone in his pants. B. Take as many photos as possible.
C. Throw his phone out of the window. D. Study the videos just for 30 minutes
14. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 4
A. He missed his parents very much. B. Life in the past was much happier.
C. It was inconvenient without phones. D. It is important to experience the visuals.
15. How is text developed
A. By reasoning. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing data. D. By experimenting.
