Tired of the busy and chaotic life in Las Vegas, Nevada for nearly ten years, my family and I decided to slow things down. We wanted to lead an environmental-friendly life.
None of us felt that this could be accomplished where we were living and we all agreed that a move to the country would be great for everyone.
Before long we set about looking for a home in Yucca, Arizona, a very small town of less than 1,000 people. When I called to inquire about the property, I was informed that there was no electricity available in the area. What No electricity I almost denied the idea immediately. But what better way is there to go green After giving it a second thought, we decided to put in an offer and moved in on Thanksgiving Day.
When we first moved to the property, we did some remodeling (改造) and stayed in our motor home. We were confronted with real challenges at the time. But the frustrations just made us work harder. We slowly got things fixed and moved into the house after 38 days.
While living here for the past four months has been a big adjustment, there are many benefits to living off the grid (电线). I think one of the most educational lessons is teaching my kids the importance of conservation. They used to take water, power and gas for granted. We started taking quicker showers, doing only full loads of laundry, turning off the water while brushing our teeth. In addition, we are also trying to make other changes which include reducing the amount of trash we generate by recycling, growing our own organic vegetables and re-purposing things that we would normally throw.
Overall, going off the grid has been great for our family. I hope that once my kids move out of the house, they will keep the habits that they have learned by living off the grid.
4. Why did the family move to a remote town
A. Financial debt forced them to save more money.
B. Having a new lifestyle has become a trend.

B. How a family of urban-residents switched to a simple life.
C. How significant it was to better adapt to a new environment.
D. How a carbon-free lifestyle has been promoted to the country.

Mogao Grottoes is located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor along the ancient Silk Road in Dunhuang, China. Until now, most mural paintings at Mogao Grottoes have been dated by directly referring to the mural texts or historical documents. However, some are still left with the creation era (年代) uncertain due to the lack of reference materials or the disagreement of art experts.
The drawing style of mural paintings was changing throughout history and can be learned and quantified (量化) through painting data. A new dating method has been developed by encoding (编码 )the drawing styles using visual codes learned through deep learning. This new method successfully discovered the creation era of six mural paintings at Mogao Grottoes.
With the help of experts from Dunhuang Academy, seven mural paintings from two grottoes (No. 205 and No. 206) were chosen as subjects for this dating research.
To figure out the creation era of these paintings, Qin Zou, a researcher from Wuhan University, collected 3,860 mural paintings from 194 different grottoes with confirmed creation-era labels. To find the visual codes that can identify the era in these paintings, the authors built a deep convolutional neural network(卷积神经网络)and classified these painting images into the right eras. Based on the classification model, a dating method was built and applied to date the seven paintings.
Six of the new dating results were approved by experts from Dunhuang Academy. “These dating results are correct and the method is great,” said Mr. Hui-Min Wang, a distinguished expert from the Archaeological Institute of Dunhuang Academy.
“To the best of our knowledge,” wrote the researchers,“ this work represents the first account of a scientific and quantitative manner to support the era prediction and reduce the uncertainties in dating ancient paintings by using deep learning.
8. What might be a reason for some murals remaining undated
A. Variety of the drawing styles B. Errors of historical literature
C. Shortage of reference materials D. Disagreement of historical documents.
9. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. Why the drawing style is always changing B. What a new dating method looks like.
C. How painting data are learned and quantified D. Whether a dating approach should be applied
10. Why does the author mention the example of Cave No. 205 and No.206
A. To compare two different drawing styles
B. To present the application of visual codes
C. To explain the creation of the classification model
D. To analyze the main features of the paintings
11. What do the researchers think of the new method
A. It is a breakthrough B. It classifies drawing styles
C. It brings many uncertainties D. It makes accurate predictions

Confucius (孔子), a famous teacher, was a politician and philosopher (哲 学 家 ) who lived in “Spring and Autumn Period”. During his lifetime, he planted the seeds for China’s complete change by teaching thousands of people. Today, he is thought to be one of the world’s greatest teachers.
Confucius grew up in a poor family. As he grew up, Confucius worked to help his mother earn money. When he wasn’t working, he would read. His favorite thing to do was to learn. His mother saw this and did her best to help him learn. One day, rich families noticed how smart he was and offered him jobs counting their money and keeping track of their crops.
Confucius did this until he was 30 years old, but he always wanted to do more.
He didn’t like the way rulers treated their people. He wanted to find a way to help people who were less fortunate than he was. Later, he founded the philosophy “Confucianism”. Confucianism states that by educating yourself, loving your family, and respecting tradition you could become a better person. Confucius believed a person could achieve these things by practicing self-discipline (自 律). For the rest of his life, Confucius traveled and taught the people of China about self-discipline and the importance of education. He even opened China’s first school that taught both the poor and the wealthy as equals. Although he became very famous among China’s lower classes, the rulers of China never accepted his teachings. Eventually, his philosophy of self-discipline helped China unite under one ruler and finally find peace. Today, Confucius is celebrated all over the world for his philosophy of education, equality, and peace over war, money, and injustice.
12. What can we know about Confucius from the passage
A. He was born in a politician family.
B. He was once a farmer guiding people farming.
C. He once acted as a math teacher.
D. He devoted himself to social development.
13. Why did rich families give him jobs
A. He likes counting money. B. He enjoyed harvesting crops.
C. He was very clever. D. He disliked rulers.
14. Which is very important to keep peace according to the author

Besides, since it is the first time that we have organized the English Drama Festival, we badly need your suggestions about how to arrange it properly.
Hopefully, you can accept my invitation. I’m sure that your advice will be of great value to us. Please inform us of your arrival in advance so that early arrangements can be made.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Stephen and a Bowl of Noodles
Stephen,a 14-year-old boy, was seen walking alone in the street. It was almost 10 o’clock at night.
His eyes were filled with tears when he recalled (回想起) the quarrel he had with his mother this evening. His mom asked about his low grades in the recent exam, and Stephen replied with a careless attitude. So she scolded (训斥) him for being so careless. Stephen got so upset that he quarreled with his mother and then stormed out of the house without realizing he was a so at fault.
He walked for hours, cold and hungry. Suddenly, a delicious smell caught his attention. It was from a small noodle shop. Stephen stopped in front of the shop, eager for a bowl of hot noodles but he didn’t have even a single penny in his pocket. With a sad face, he stood there for a minute and decided to leave.
Just when he was about to go away, the shop owner saw him and invited him in. Stephen said he had no money for the food. The shop owner smiled, saying, “It’s OK. I won’t charge you for it.” Then the shop owner served him a bowl of delicious noodles.
Stephen was in tears when he ate the noodles. The shop owner asked what had happened. Stephen told him about the quarrel with his mother and that he felt his mother did not understand him.
