One old gentleman stayed, admiring the tablecloth. At the same time, he said to the young man, “What a coincidence, many years ago my wife and I also owned such a tablecloth. But we lived in Vienna then.” On hearing these words, the young man told the old man about his encounter with the old woman in the house that snowy day.“Can it be true that she is alive ” asked the old man, tears streaming down his cheeks. “How can I find her ” Fortunately, the young man remembered her address.
The young man drove the old man to that old woman’s home. Together they knocked on her apartment door. When she opened it, both of them recognized each other immediately. Obviously, they were too surprised and excited to express themselves. With trembling hands, they hugged tightly. “I was told you had died. How did you find me ” the old woman said. “Thanks to that magical tablecloth,” the old man replied. The young man witnessed the tearful, joyful and thrilling reunion of the husband and wife.★秘密·启用前

Humans have been keeping animals as pets for tens of thousands of years, but Dr Jean-Loup. Rault, an animal scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia, believes new companions are coming: robot pets.
“Technology is moving very fast,” Rault told ABC News, “The Tamagotchi in the early 1990s was really the first robotic pet, and now Sony and other big companies have improved them a lot.”
This may not sit well with pet lovers. After all, who would choose a plastic toy instead of a lovely puppy But Rault argues that many people are going for it: “You don’t have to feed it, you don’t have to walk it, it won’t make a mess in your house, and you can go on a holiday without feeling’ guilty.” The technology also benefits those who are allergic to pets, short on space, or fearful of real animals.
It’s not clear whether robot pets can replace real ones. But studies do suggest that we can develop deep bond with these smart machines. People give their cars names and kids give their toy animals life stories. It’s the same with robots. When Sony stopped its repair service for its robot dog Aibo in March 2014, owners in Japan held funerals.
As an animal welfare researcher, Rault is concerned about how robotic pets could affect our attitudes towards live animals: “If we become used to a robotic companion that doesn’t need food, water or exercises, perhaps it will change how humans cared about other living beings,” he said.
So are dogs and cats a thing of the past, as Rault predicts For those who grew up with living and breathing pets, the mechanical kind might not do. But for our next generation who are in constant touch with smart technology, a future in which lovely pets needn’t have a heartbeat might not be a far-fetched dream.

I read Newport’s book, Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, which he published in 2016. In this book, Newport makes the persuasive argument that highly focused work is increasingly not common in the modern workplace.
People are easy to get distracted (分心), whether they’re surfing the Internet for entertainment or wasting time on tasks like email and meetings. However, those who are able to push their cognitive (认知的) abilities to the limit can create new value and improve their skills. In other words, training one’s mind to focus on deep work not only makes one efficient and produces valuable work, but it also secures one’s place in a quickly changing economy.
Part I of Newport’s book explains the importance of deep work. Part II explores the process of how to develop such a practice in one’s own life by following four rules: (1) Work deeply; (2) Accept boredom; (3) Quit social media; (4) Remove shallow things.
Newport praises the importance of daily laziness in this book, writing, “Add regular and great freedom from professional concerns into your day, providing you with the idleness (闲散) required to get deep work done.” He advises doing this by shutting everything down at the end of the workday.
Deep Work is packed with useful tips and tools for making meaningful changes. Since picking up the book several weeks ago, I’ve been using bits and pieces of the philosophy, such as leaving my phone on silent all day long and checking it only at predetermined times, and not allowing myself to look things up online until I’ve finished writing an article. Now I’m able to start additional projects that I’ve been wanting to do but haven’t felt like I had the time before.
8.Which of the following is a benefit of deep work
A.Avoiding boredom.
B.Increasing job security.
C.Keeping away from social media.
D.Adapting to new changes quickly.
9.What is stressed in this book according to Paragraph 4
A.The significance of relaxing. B.Ways of reducing concerns.
C.The advice on deep work. D.Benefits of being lazy.
10.What can we learn from the story in the last paragraph
A.Interest is the best teacher.
B.The old methods still work today.
C.It is difficult to put theory into practice.
D.Concentration helps improve work efficiency.
11.What’s the text mainly about
A.A life experience. B.A best-selling writer.
C.An introduction to a book. D.A study on concentration.

Japanese automaker Toyota has announced plans to create a model “city of the future” to test and develop new technologies. The project will involve “building a complete city from the ground up” at the foot of Japan’s Mount Fuji. The company announced the plans during the yearly CES technology show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Toyota calls the project “Woven City”. It is meant to be a model for creating “smart cities” around the world. A smart city is an area developed with high-speed internet connectivity to link major information and communication systems. These systems-powered by data and sensors-can improve living conditions relating to things like energy, transportation and health.
Smart cities can be designed to greatly cut human-caused pollution, reduce traffic problems and create new uses for internet technology to affect everyday life. The Woven City will aim to be a “living laboratory” for technologies including self-driving systems, robotics, smart homes and artificial intelligence.
The city will be built on land where an automobile factory currently operates. The city will cover about 70 hectares of land and is designed to hold around 2,000 people. Residents could include Toyota employees and visiting researchers. The city will have its own police officers, fire and emergency services and schools. The city’s main electrical power will come from hydrogen fuel technology. The city is planned to be fully sustainable, with buildings made mostly of wood. Buildings will be made with solar equipment to produce additional electricity.
12.What do we know from Paragraph 2
A.The explanation of a smart city. B.The living conditions in the future.
C.Clean energy for “city of the future”. D.The importance of communication systema
13.Which is mentioned in Paragraph 4

People refer to never forgetting how to ride a bike or throw a baseball as examples of “muscle memory”, the result of a motor learning. 16 It is a phenomenon that previously trained muscles acquire strength after a period of disuse.
Previous research has shown that the changes actually persist in the muscles themselves. In one study of mice, the results suggest that after nuclei in muscle cells multiply in response to an overload of training, those extra nuclei aren’t lost during subsequent periods of inactivity. They are retained (保留), essentially waiting to be reactivated. If you fell off the fitness wagon (马车) during the pandemic, don’t be frustrated. Once you have got additional nuclei, you are banking the capacity. 17 In fact, a recent study revealed that less than eight weeks of retraining were needed to regain your former fitness. It depends on how fit you were initially, how long the layoff was, how old you are and how long you’d been exercising.
18 It means you still have a distinct advantage when it comes to regaining your former level of fitness. And the principle applies to both resistance training and endurance training. The best way to regain your muscle memory is to start at a level below what you were accustomed to doing, and then gradually increase in terms of duration, frequency, then intensity. 19
Ultimately, muscle memory is a payoff for all the past work you put into learning a sport. 20 You will never know how much muscle memory you may have until you start training again.
A.The best way to tap into it is to “get back on the horse”.
B.Physiologists, on the other hand, define it in a different way.
C.This convinces the researchers that muscle memory may not be long lasting.
D.That is to say, we can do the sports automatically without conscious thought.
E.It is generally safe to increase these elements by 5 percent every week or two.
F.It is evident that the more you exercise, the more muscle memory savings you will have.
G.All this news about muscle memory is encouraging for those who fell off the fitness scheme.

In 1968 a grave dating from about 1100 was uncovered near Hattula, in Finland, Little remained of the occupant’s skeleton, but the inhumation included two swords and a knife. Such grave goods would normally suggest said occupant was a man. The skeleton was, 21 also decorated with brooches (胸针) and woollen clothing of types more usually worn at the time by women. This 22 guess that the burial was actually of a powerful woman, possibly a local ruler in her own right rather than just the wife of a male king.
This would be noteworthy enough. But a re-examination of the remains, just published in the European Journal of Archaeology by Ulla Moilanen of the University of Turku and Elina Salmela of the University of Helsinki, suggests the truth may be yet more 23 . Ms. Moilanen and Dr Salmela suspect that the individual 24 may have had outward characteristics of both a man and a woman.
In 1968 working out the 25 of a skeleton in an ancient grave was tricky. After years of deterioration, the bones of men and women look pretty much 26 . But that was before the use of DNA became possible. So Ms. Moilanen and Dr Salmela thought it worth trying again.
Most people have two sex chromosomes (染色体): XX in women and XY in men. Find DNA from a Y-chromosome in a skeleton and the chances are the body was 27 . And, looking at a fragment of femur brought to her by Ms. Moilanen, who is the archaeologist in the 28 , Dr. Salmela, who is the geneticist, did indeed find such DNA.But not much of it. That led her to wonder about contamination (污染), but also to consider whether the individual in the grave had had a(n) 29 X-chromosome that was swamping the signal from the Y.
Having an abnormal number of sex chromosomes is rare, but not vanishingly so. The particular 30 XXY leads to what is known as Klinefelter’s syndrome. To determine the occupant’s karyotype (染色体组型) from the tiny amount of DNA available, Dr. Salmela drew 31 with living people. The grave delivered 8,329 pieces, so she used a computer to draw samples of similar size from the genomes of living people with various karyotypes, including XXY, and also from mixtures of both sexes, to 32 contamination. She then compared these with the DNA from the grave and 33 it was 99.75% probable the individual concerned had indeed had Klinefelter’s syndrome.
While Dr Salmela was working all this out, Ms. Moilanen and her team had another look at the grave. They confirmed that it was a 34 burial. For instance, they found evidence of fine furs, probably from foxes. Clearly, this was a well-respected human being, but what led to that 35 in a world then dominated by male values is a matter of puzzle. Perhaps the person came from a family powerful enough for such things not to matter.

In the past few years, scientists have found microplastics in our soil, tap water, bottled water, beer and even in the air we breathe. And there’s growing concern about the potential health risks they pose 36 humans.
The new analysis in the UK have discovered microplastics widely distributed across all 10 lakes and rivers sampled. More than 1,000 small pieces of plastic per litre were found in the River Tame, which was revealed last year as 37 (pollute) place tested worldwide. Even in relatively remote places such as the Falls of Dochart and Loch Lomond in Scotland, two or three pieces per litre were found.
Microplastics are not a specific kind of plastic, but rather any type of small pieces of plastic 38 is less than 5 mm in length according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They 39 originate from a variety of sources, including cosmetics, clothing, and industrial processes.
Humans are known to consume the tiny plastic particles through food and water, but the possible health effects on people and ecosystems have yet 40 (determine). One study, in Singapore, has found that microplastics can harbor harmful microbes.
Research by the National University of Singapore found more than 400 types of bacteria on 275 pieces of microplastic 41 (collect) from local beaches. 42 included insects that cause gastroenteritis (肠胃炎) and wound infections in humans.
“Microplastics 43 (find) absolutely everywhere now but we do not know the harm they could be doing,” said Christian Dunn at Bangor University, Wales, who led the work. “It’s no use 44 (look) back in 20 years’ time and saying: ‘If only we’d realized just how bad it was.’ We need to be monitoring our waters now and we need to think, as a country and a world, 45 we can be reducing our reliance on plastic.”

A young man had bought an old house that was in bad shape, but he and his wife believed they could restore it. They immediately went to work. Their goal was to have the old building look best for New Year’s Eve get together.
Just two days before New Year, however, a storm swept through the area, leaving a hole in the wall of the house. There was obviously no time to repair the damage before New Year. Then, the sad couple attended a local auction (拍卖) that afternoon. One of the items put up for bids was an old gold and ivory colored tablecloth. Seized by an inspiration, the young man was the highest bidder at $6.50. His idea was to hang the cloth to cover the ragged hole.
On the day before New Year, it was snowy. As the young man unlocked the house door, he noticed an old woman standing at the bus stop. He knew the bus wouldn’t be there within at least half an hour, so he invited her inside to keep warm.
When the woman walked in and saw the tablecloth, she rushed at it and said excitedly, “It’s mine. It is my tablecloth.” She told the surprised man its history and even showed him her name in one corner of the tablecloth. She and her husband had once lived in Vienna, Austria, and their village was hit by a deadly disease. So they decided to flee to Switzerland, but her husband told her to leave first, saying he had something urgent to deal with. A few days later, it was reported that the bus her husband took fell off the cliff (悬崖) and he was never to be found. Her husband was believed to have died. Touched by her story, the young couple asked about her address, planning to send the tablecloth to her after New Year. As the bus came, she left.
In the candlelight of New Year’s Eve, the tablecloth looked even more beautiful. As the man’s friends left the house, they thanked the man for his arrangement and mentioned how beautiful the house looked.
