四、阅读理解
“Do you go to a window when you hear a clap of thunder, or pounding rain, or see a streak of lightning (闪电) in the sky Me too. Except I take my curiosity a little bit further. I go out and chase the biggest storms I can find. ”
The quote above was from Tim Samaras. Tim’s curiosity started when be was about six years old when he saw the fantastic tornado in the movie the Wizard of Oz. And this curiosity took him in search of some of the worst storms and tornadoes in recent history.
He spent over half of his life running into the path of tornadoes to place research tools in the right places to gather information. He battled dangerous and powerful winds, pounding rain, chunks of hail, and the eerie noise of a racing tornado many times. He even saw the destruction of an entire community. Tim was a storm researcher and an explorer.
Tim didn’t put himself in harm’s way for the thrill of it; he did it for the science. His goal was to answer questions about tornadoes to help people better prepare for these violent storms.
When Tim went after storms, sometimes the tables were turned and the storms chased him! That’s exactly what happened to Tim and his team while tracking a tornado. Upon seeing the tornado change course and head directly for them, the team jumped into action and quickly set up a tornado measuring device and then quickly drove away.
Besides chasing storms, Tim also wanted to inspire young people to study science and take up scientific research. “If you are as interested in weather as I do, learn as much as you can about weather. There are many colleges and universities that have active tornado research programs that allow students to participate at all levels. Most of all, keep your focus on what you want to do ! Sometimes schoolwork can become very difficult. Keep at it, and you will do great!”
24.What made Tim curious about storms and tornadoes
A.A book. B.A film.
C.Lightning. D.Love for science.
25.Why did Tim go after the tornadoes
A.He wanted to see the destruction it made.
B.He tried to answer the students’ questions.
C.He was curious about how tornados look.
D.He hoped to help others stay safe in the future.
26.What did Tim and his team do first when facing a dangerous storm
A.Drove away quickly.
B.Took a safe shelter.
C.Turned their table.
D.Set up measuring equipment.
27.According to Tim, how could students overcome learning difficulties
A.By taking up scientific research.
B.By sticking to their learning goal.
C.By participating in school programs.
D.By remembering as much as possible.
Nobody expects a natural disaster to strike. Neither does anyone know the impact it can have on life. The following measures can save your life in an emergency.
Typhoon
Typhoons occur in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, particularly in exposed regions like the Caroline Islands, the Philippines, and Japan. The best place to hide during a typhoon is a secure basement or a bathroom with no windows. A must-have device is a battery-powered weather radio, through which you will hear evacuation orders or in other cases, instructions on how to survive in your shelter and learn about the weather situation.
Flood
Floods occur more often than any other natural disaster and change the landscape dramatically. They are usually caused by intense rainfalls lasting for days. Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house. Once you hear the evacuation warning, leave for safer higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container.
Avalanche
An avalanche can hit when you are enjoying Alpine skiing in a dreamlike location. It is very fast and disastrous, burying everything in its way under tons of snow. When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. If you get buried in the snow, dig an air pocket to be able to keep breathing. Wait for the rescue team to find you and don’t waste your energy shouting or digging frantically. Call out when you hear the team approaching.
Wildfire
Wildfires spread at an amazing speed and destroy everything in their way. If you are caught in a wild fire, use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth to ensure that you can breathe. Try to stay upwind of the fire at all times and get close to a pond or river. Stay low and cover yourself with wet clothing, a blanket, or soil until the fire passes.
28.Among the four natural disasters, which one requires people to hide indoors
A.Typhoon. B.Flood.
C.Avalanche. D.Wildfire.
29.What should those trapped in typhoons probably do when they hear the evacuation orders
A.Get to a basement or windowless bathroom.
B.Find something solid to hide under.
C.Leave the place where they are.
D.Get a torch in case of a blackout.
30.What do we know from the text
A.Typhoons occur only in the exposed regions in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.
B.Floods cause the most frequent damage among the disasters mentioned.
C.Those who meet with avalanches are advised to call out the minute they’re trapped.
D.Getting clean air matters most in the case of wildfires, despite the difficulty.
An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile items, like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire breakouts during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the stairs at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in debris (瓦砾堆), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle (哨子) if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself. Do not move about or kick up dust.
31.The purpose of the passage is to tell readers _____.
A.the damage caused by earthquakes
B.the rescue work after earthquakes
C.what to do about earthquakes
D.how to prevent earthquakes
32.The underlined word “Fragile” in Paragraph 2 probably means _____.
A.easily broken B.easily found C.expensive D.heavy
33.During the earthquake, people are advised to _____.
A.go out the building at once
B.turn off electricity and gas immediately
C.take shelter under a tree
D.drive to a safe place quickly
34.What should people NOT do when they are trapped in debris
A.Cover their mouth with a handkerchief.
B.Tap on a pipe or wall for help.
C.Use a whistle for help.
D.Light a match for help.
Earthquakes happen without warning (前兆). They can happen any time of a day, at any point during the year. But don’t worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people. However, it’s important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening.
Do NOT go outside. You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings. If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines (输电线).
Stay under a desk, table, or other strong furniture. Hold on to it. Or stay in a corner of the building. Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel or clothing. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.
Keep away from windows, pictures or advertisements on the wall or the building, and anything else that could fall and hurt you. Most people get injured by falling things during an earthquake, not by the shaking itself.
Also keep away from a fire. You could fall down and burn yourself on the fire.
If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it’s safe. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don’t drive near bridges. Try not to stop by power lines or trees. These could fall and hurt you.
35.Most earthquakes are too _________ to hurt people.
A.strong B.heavy C.dangerous D.weak
36.From the passage, when an earthquake is happening, we should __________.
A.Stay under a big building B.Stay under a strong furniture
C.Stand by windows D.drive near a big bridge
37.It isn’t safe for you to _______ while the earthquake is happening.
A.cover your head with your arms B.stay in a corner of the building
C.run out of the building D.cover your mouth with a towel
38.This passage tells us __________.
A.How to be safe in an earthquake
B.How dangerous the earthquake is
C.We shouldn’t be afraid of the earthquake
D.How the earthquake comes into being
五、七选五
Severe weather systems like tsunamis, hurricanes and earthquakes throw a threat to anyone in their path. 39 Scientists have followed behavioral patterns in storm systems, animals, insects and other natural phenomena to uncover helpful signals to keep you safe.
40 Tsunamis are long, powerful waves created by subsea earth movements and can rise to 100 feet tall. When there’ s a powerful enough earthquake in the ocean, water quickly retracts(缩回) to help feed the wave. If you’re enjoying a day at the beach and notice the ocean tides start to roll away fast, head to higher ground immediately. That’s the nature’s way of telling you, “A tsunami is heading your way real soon.”
41 Cats, dogs and other animals are known to get anxious and run away moments before an earthquake strikes. These animals are able to sense the preliminary waves that signal an earthquake ahead of the more destructive waves. Humans can’t detect the first set of waves. 42
An increased ocean swell means a hurricane is on its way. Roughly three days before a hurricane makes landfall, the ocean swell increases around six feet in height. The swell creates giant ocean waves that crash against the shore about every nine seconds. 43
A.Head to higher ground if the ocean level drops.
B.But what if there were ways to avoid danger
C.This is one of the earliest signs of an approaching hurricane.
D.If animals start panicking, you might experience an earthquake.
E.Advance planning and quick response are the keys to avoiding danger.
F.However, your pets could give enough time to run outside where it’s safer.
G.You can take steps to stay safe and comfortable while facing various disasters.

60.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem—inability to read. (阅读障碍)
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but later he was given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forget my dog.
There on the book’s cover was a dog which looked the same with my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my checks. It was until then I realized that I have overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed in real sense.

Our Experience Activity
Our school organized us to take part in an activity in the Children’s Palace from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on December 17th. It was aimed to help us learn more about natural disasters.
During the activity, we learned some basic ways to deal with different natural disasters. We also experienced natural disasters such as an earthquake, a flood, a tornado, a tsunami and a volcanic eruption in VR, where we deeply felt the danger of natural pared to the knowledge we have gained in our class, what we have learnt in the activity is practical and instructive.
60.My mother’s call returned me to the real world and I suddenly realized something. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. From then on, I kept going to the library more often. In the library, I was exposed to different types of books: detective storied, love stories, poems, fables and so on. My mother encouraged me to spend time doing my favorite thing. Day by day, I finally succeeded in overcoming my inability of read. Moreover, I began to write some stories by myself. When I went to university, I chose literature as my major.
Last year, my mother was so proud that her son was rewarded a PhD in literature. I never told my mother about my “miraculous” experience that summer. It was the very first book that made me what I am today. This year, I began writing my first book on the topic of my dog. I hope it could be my lifelong career. The power of the words has held.
