The early winter storm was much worse than what my parents had expected. “Sweetheart, ” Dad said to Mom, "I've got to get out of bed and go to check on the turkeys." When Dad left the house, Mom worried that he would not be able to make it to the farm. The snow was whipping( 吹打) around our little house at 40 miles per hour, and there was deep snow on the road.

As the sun came out, hundreds of cars drove up the snowy road to the Fowler farm. Seeing the birds lying here and there, friends felt sorry for us. But our feelings changed as more people arrived.
Nearly all of the birds, which still had to be cleaned, were paid for in cash( 现 金 ). Knowing that a sad story was having a happy ending, neighbors talked and even laughed. Often more money was given than what the birds would have cost at the shop.
