Whether you are hoping to relax or you are looking forward to staying active in vacation, seeking out great hikes is a good choice. If you are planning a trip to southern California, or you live in San Diego, now it is time to search for new hiking trails (路线). Here are some of the most popular hikes in San Diego.
Cedar Greek Falls
For this hike, you’ll hike from the Cedar Creek Falls to the Devil’s Punch Bowl, which is a pool at the base of Cedar Greek Falls. It can really heat up in the summer, and it is hard to hike, so be sure to pack lots of water and protein-filled snacks.
Cuyamaca Peak (顶峰)
The peak is in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and you’ll see plenty of snow-capped trees if you do this hike in the winter. There are 37 trails in the state park, but you’ll want to stick to Azalea Glen Loop. It’s a difficult sever mile hike that will bring you right to Cuyamaca Peak.
Cowles Mountain
It is well known that Cowles Mountain is the highest point in San Diego—so it’s worth visiting for the fact that you can see Mexico from the peak. The three-mile hike is quite difficult. If you are willing to wake up before the sun, Cowles Mountain is a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise. It's one of San Diego’s most popular hikes, so starting early might also help avoid the crowds.
Swami’s Beach
Take the trail from Swami’s Beach to Cardiff Beach and you will experience impressive ocean views and the smooth sound of waves crashing onto the sand. As an easy out-and-back hike, the path is accessible (可进入的) from Swami’s Beach and is about three miles in total.

Rain was beating down on my car as I drove slowly down a less-traveled road. Suddenly the steering wheel jumped in my hands as one of the tires burst with a bang. It was impossible for me to change that tire! A thought that a passing motorist might stop disappeared at once. Why would anyone I knew I wouldn’t. Then I remembered that a short distance up a little side road was a house. I started the engine and drove slowly until I came to that house.
I honked the horn. Then the door opened and a little girl about eight stood there. I rolled down the window and called out that I needed someone to change the flat tire because I was disabled and couldn’t do it myself. A moment later, the girl came out with raincoat and hat, followed by a man who called a cheerful greeting. I sat there comfortable and dry, and felt sorry for the man and the little girl working so hard in the storm. Well, I would pay them for it. The rain seemed to be little now, and I rolled down the window to watch. It seemed to me that they were awfully slow and I was beginning to become impatient. Finally, it was done and then they were standing at my car window.
He said, “This is a bad night for car trouble, but you’re all set now.” “Thanks,” I said. “How much do I owe you ” He shook his head. “Nothing. Cynthia told me you were on crutches. Glad to be of help. There’s no charge.” I held out a five-dollar bill, but he made no effort to take it and the little girl stepped closer to me and said, “Grandpa can’t see it.”
A blind old man and a child! They were just working with cold, wet fingers for tools in the dark—a darkness that for him would probably never end until death. I don’t remember how long I sat there after they said good night, but it was long enough for me to search deep within myself. I realized that I was filled with self-pity, selfishness, indifference to the needs of others and thoughtlessness.
Helping others is a way of life, one that I am trying to follow. It isn’t always easy, but the value is there. I am trying now not only to climb 14 steps each day, but in my small way to help others.
19. The writer didn’t expect others to stop to help him as he thought they would _____.
A. not notice him in the rain B. not know he was disabled
C. be unlikely to travel on that road D. turn a blind eye to the needs of others
20. As the time taken to change the tire became longer, the writer began to feel _____.
A. sorry for the man and the girl B. critical of the man and the girl
C. unwilling to pay the man and the girl D. grateful to the man and the girl
21. The grandfather needed the girl’s help because of _____.
A. the darkness B. the heavy rain C. his blindness D. his old age
22. What did the writer learn from the experience mentioned above
A. He should learn how to do things for himself.
B. Disabled people should know how to drive on rainy days.
C. Age doesn’t matter when it comes to giving a helping hand.
D. He should not be selfish and should try to help others if possible.
C
As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers.
There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection (拒绝). But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate(低估)how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.
A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely arbitrary.
Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.
The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting to know each other in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting others in personal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap continued to exist.
The data also showed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.
23. Why does the author mention his childhood experience
A. To show how his character changed.
B. To explain what he was like when he was young.
C. To show an example of why people are shy of communication.
D. To emphasize the important role of a mother in one’s childhood.
24. What does the underlined word “arbitrary” probably mean
A. various. B. unreasonable. C. unsuccessful. D. serious
25. What do we know about the liking gap from the text
A. It indicates what strangers really think of us.
B. It begins and ends quickly among strangers.
C. It disappears when strangers get to know each other.
D. It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.
26. Which of the following is the best title for this text
A. People Like You More than You Know
B. How to Get Along Well with Strangers
C. The Way to Know What Others Think of Us
D. Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us

Therapy (治疗) dogs have long visited nursing homes and schools and even disaster sites, offering comfort to humans. A new study shows that a 10-minute visit from a therapy dog can help relieve patients’ pain in the emergency room.
The research from the University of Saskatchewan, published in the journal PLOS on Wednesday, found that emergency room patients who were visited by a therapy dog reported less pain than those who weren’t.
“Therapy dogs themselves are really friendly and are so excited to visit with people in places where they don’t typically have a pet.” Dr. Colleen Dell, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and one of the study authors, told NPR.
In a trial (试验), researchers asked more than 200 patients to report their pain levels. One group of patients received a 10-minute visit from a therapy dog and the other group did not. After the visit, researchers asked patients in both groups to report their pain levels again. Those who spent 10 minutes with the dog reported less pain, the study found.
“Many patients have experienced positive outcome from therapy dogs, but this study clinically proves them”, said Dell, herself a therapy dog handler.
Stempien, an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Saskatchewan has seen the dogs in action at the hospital where he works. Before the pandemic (大流行病), a therapy dog would visit multiple times a week. During visits, the dog would often make a stop in the nursing lounge (休息室) before visiting with patients.
“I think it brought smiles on faces of almost all the staff they interacted with,” Stempien told NPR.
But the people aren’t the only ones getting something out of this. “Therapy dogs love their job. They love to interact with people.” Dell said, “Though we need more research on this, we believe they also gain something out of it as well as giving while visiting with people.”
27. How did researchers carry out their study
A. Collecting numbers.
B. Organizing tests.
C. Studying previous study projects.
D. Conducting questionnaires.
28. Which of the following is true about the trial
A. Different patients received different treatments from the therapy dogs.
B. Those visited by the therapy dogs reported more positive results.
C. Those visited by the therapy dogs lessen their pain totally.
D. 200 doctors and nurses took part in the trial.
29. What can you know from the last paragraph
A. Therapy dogs are only interested in helping people.
B. Therapy dogs fell less pain when staying with people.
C. Therapy dogs can also get something when helping people.
D The present research is enough to prove that therapy dogs love their job.
30. Where does this text probably come from
A A health magazine B. An animal encyclopedia
C. A biology textbook D. A science fiction

21. The grandfather needed the girl’s help because of _____.

D 200 doctors and nurses took part in the trial.
29. What can you know from the last paragraph
A. Therapy dogs are only interested in helping people.
B. Therapy dogs fell less pain when staying with people.
C. Therapy dogs can also get something when helping people.
D. The present research is enough to prove that therapy dogs love their job.
