People find that babies as young as 18 months can help with housework. When parents say to those babies, “Just look at the paper,” they will pick it up.
Some parents think childhood is just for playing, so they don’t ask their children to do housework. Some parents think that their children get much schoolwork every day, and they are too busy for housework. Some parents say, “I know it’s wrong, but it’s quicker to do it by myself!” Other parents believe that doing housework is a way of teaching kids responsibility (责任) . Children learn to help, share and care about others by doing housework.
Most experts (专家) think that there are some reasons for doing housework:
★To learn responsibility: Children who do more housework are always ready to help others.
★To share the work together: Kids who help to clean won’t make a big mess in a family.
★To learn skills: Kids will learn how to cook, clean and do other things in the house.
Experts also think that the housework should fit (适合) the child. A five-year-old child for example, may not take dish-washing. However, this age child could pick up toys and try to keep the home tidy. As the child ages, he or she can get more housework, like washing dishes, walking the dog, or doing some easy cooking.
If the child has much schoolwork after school, the time for housework may be really short. So, parents should think over how much homework a child already has, and plan housework carefully. Be sure of more housework on the weekend but not on weekdays. And some families also find a good solution: doing some easy housework together each night, for example, putting away toys and doing some cleaning after meals. It saves time and gets everyone to make a cleaner family.
Doing housework is a good way for growing a better child and better parents. Parents should be a model for their children. Some young children are happy to do housework because when they are doing what mom or dad does, they feel more grown up. So, let’s do housework together with family members.
