Eric Liddell was known as the flying Scotsman(苏格兰人)because he ran so fast. But he is mostremembered as a man of honour and bravery. He was born in 1902 in Tianjin, north China. In Chinese, he was known as Li Airui. Eric lived in China until the age of five. After that his parents sent him to school in England. In 1920, Eric went to the University of Edinburgh to study science. Sports played a large part in his life and he became the fastest runner in Scotland. He was chosen to be part of Britain's 1924 Olympic team. The games were in Paris. The 100?metre race was his best event, but it was to be held on a Sunday. Eric, a strong Christian(基督徒),refused to run on Sundays because he believed that it should be a day of rest as the Bible(圣经)teaches. Although many people told him to run the race, he refused. Instead, he started to train for other distances. At the Olympics he won a bronze medal in the 200-metre race and then a gold medal in the 400?metre race, setting a world record. Though he was famous in Scotland, Eric still loved and remembered China. He wanted to go back to the country where he was born. In 1925, he went to China and worked as a middle school teacher in Tianjin. Then he went to Hebei Province to help the poor people there. After the Japanese invaded(入侵)China, Eric chose to stay. He wanted to help the sick and give hope to the Chinese people. In 1943, the Japanese sent him to a prison camp(集中营)in Weifang. Even in the camp, he continued to help the old people. He also arranged games for the children, and taught them science. In 1945, Eric was very ill. He was given a chance to leave the camp but he refused. Instead, he gave this chance to a pregnant(怀孕的) woman. This inspiring man died six months before the end of the war. Many people still remember his service to the Chinese people of that area. He was a true hero!

Zhao Jing is now a famous calligrapher(书法家) in Anhui. His works are getting more and more popular. Zhao Jing was a worker in a factory several years ago. His family lived a happy life until an accident happened to Zhao Jing.
One day, he was badly hurt by a large machine. The operation lasted for three hours. He woke up to find that he had lost both of his arms. That made him so sad that he even thought of ending his life. However, his wife's and parents' selfless love helped him to cheer up again. “I shouldn't depend on my parents or my wife for the rest of my life. I want to learn penmanship(书法),” Zhao Jing said. Then he told his family about his resolution.
Zhao Jing went from door to door to collect waste paper. He bit(咬) the writing brush with his teeth and began to write. He kept on writing for thirty years. The piles of used paper and so many old brushes in the room made his dream come true. He is so good at penmanship that he has won lots of prizes.
“Never Give Up Your Dreams” is Zhao Jing's motto and he will continue his steps.

Bill Gates is head of the software company Microsoft and one of the world’s richest men. He was born on October 28, 1955 and grew up in Seattle with his two sisters. He was a very bright boy. Science and maths were his two favourite subjects at school. And he dreamed of being a scientist.
Bill first started to play on computers at the age of 13. At that time, a computer was a very large machine. Once he was interested in a very old computer. He and some of his friends spent as much time as possible on computers. In the end, they worked out a software programme. Bill sold it for 4,200 dollars when he was only 17.
In 1973, Bill went to Harvard University. In 1975, Bill and his partners developed a software programme called BASIC. This was not the first programme ever created, but its inventors were the first to decide that people who wanted to use it should pay for it. BASIC was a success. Then Bill left Harvard to work for Microsoft, a company he started in 1975 with his boyhood friend Paul Allen. They thought the computer would come into every office and every home soon. So they began developing software for personal computers. They improved the software to make it easier for people to use computers. After many years of hard work, Microsoft becomes one of the most successful companies. And Bill Gates also becomes one of the richest businessmen in the world.

Chen-Chieh Chuang believes that medicine is an art. He also believes that art is good medicine. Chuang is an artist, but he is also a doctor. Chuang believes that both art and medicine help people to heal(治愈). Before he sees his first patient(病人)every morning, Chuang paints. “. . . Art heals me, ”he says. And he hopes to use his art to heal others.
Chuang was born in Taiwan. He learned to paint when he was a child. From a very young age, he wanted to be both an artist and a doctor. When he went to college, he studied art and biochemistry(生物化学)at Brown University in Rhode Island. After Chuang graduated from Brown, he taught art in New York City for a year. Then he began to study in the medical school at Yale University.
After medical school, Chuang worked as a doctor in poor communities. He traveled and worked all over the United States, from Arizona to Alaska. During this time, he also continued painting. He painted the beautiful things of nature, for example plants, flowers, and birds.
A few years ago, Chuang decided to work in one place for a while. He opened a medical office in Massachusetts. He also began to show and sell his paintings, and he started a class for medical students called Art and Medicine. Chuang designed it to help students see the relationship between art and medicine. He wants to help students become creative doctors.
In 2005, Chuang bought his own building and moved his medical practice(诊所)there. “It’s my big art project, ”says Chuang. Outside the building, there are thousands of flowers and trees. In the waiting area, there are large windows and plants everywhere. Chuang’s paintings and photographs are on the walls. There are also books on art, health, sports, and of course, medicine.
Next to the waiting area, there is a kitchen. There is always fruit there for the patients. Sometimes Chuang bakes bread, and the smell fills the waiting area. Chuang says, “Most of the time when people come to the doctor’s, they are already nervous. I want to make them feel comfortable. ”
Patients love everything about Dr. Chuang’s medical practice, from the gardens outside to the beautiful paintings inside. But they especially love Dr. Chuang, the artist and doctor who created this special place.

Mo Yan, 2012’s winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature(诺贝尔文学奖), was born in a small town of Gaomi in Shandong Province. His parents were farmers. And as a young boy Mo took care of the family’s goats(山羊). Each day he took the goats outside and watched over them when they ate grass.
It was a lonely job, but Mo was a smart boy. He enjoyed the green, open land of Shandong. He enjoyed looking up at the blue sky and the white clouds. To pass the time he talked to the goats. He told them his thoughts and some stories. It was the beginning of his life as a storyteller.
During the Cultural Revolution(文化大革命), Mo had to leave school and work for a company. This was difficult for Mo, because he loved books and he loved reading. Luckily, he found a friend who would lend him books. Later, Mo became a soldier and was able to continue his education. In the end he graduated from Beijing Normal University(北京师范大学). This is where he began to write.
Although Mo had left Gaomi, Gaomi never left him. Many of his books talk about rural life and the people of Gaomi. For Mo, all of human nature can be seen in the village life of Gaomi. Mo is famous now, but he remains a true son of soil(土地).
