NPR’s Student Podcast (播客) Challenge is back—for a fifth year! This year’s competition will open for entries on September 6, 2023 and close on October 28.
As in past years, our judges will choose winners in two categories: grades five through eight and grades nine through twelve. Entries must be submitted by an educator or a student leader who’s 18 years old or older. Another important rule is that the maximum length of your podcast is within eight minutes, and longer entries will be disqualified.
Our judges will use the following criteria to narrow down and choose the winners:
Information and structure, 40 percent
Does the podcast tell a good story or teach us something new and important Is it structured in a way that keeps listeners engaged Can we easily follow the story you’re telling or the information you’re explaining Have you spent time cutting out unnecessary information to make sure the main ideas come through clearly
Personality and creativity, 40 percent
Does it have personality, or does it sound like you’re reading from a script (脚本) Does it make us laugh or cry or leave us deep in thought
Production 20 percent
We’re not judging you on how fancy your equipment is and we don’t expect you to be an expert on recording and editing sound, but we hope you’ll try.
Some podcasts may use a narration format. Others may be more of an interview format. If you use sound apart from interviews and narration, make sure it is clear and smooth.
21. Who are qualified to submit the podcast to the competition
A. Editors. B. Students. C. Parents. D. Teachers.
22. What is a requirement for the entries
A. They should be more than eight minutes. B. They must be well structured and edited.
C. They must be produced with special sound effects.D. They have to adopt an interview format.
23. Which statement is NOT true about the competition
A. October 28 is the deadline for all the participants to hand in their entry.
B. The content of a podcast must be educational as well as entertaining.
C. It doesn’t matter whether students are using equipment of high quality
D. Winners are evaluated in different aspects other than the script or format.

The most important life lesson I’ve learned from running is to run at my own pace. This lesson has guided me in many ways. In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.
Running is a metaphor (隐喻) for life. I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice: run at your own best pace — setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right. Over time I ran more easily and faster. I also enjoyed the experience much more.
I have applied this principle to other areas of my life. Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day. It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life. Running carries its own set of expectations, including what people at certain life stage should be doing or not doing. Expectations at my age can center on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandparent.
I used to think it was young people who bore the impact of peer pressure, but older adults can experience it too. This is ironic, because often later in this life is a time when we tend to care less about the opinions of others.
I’m not suggesting we postpone dreams. Of course, we should do what matters to us, but it’s easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. It’s a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.
Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at. Run at your own way. Our bodies know what they need. Our hearts know what they need. In living life on our own terms, we will likely feel stronger in body, mind and spirit.
24. What motivated the author to participate in marathon
A. Her keen wish to celebrate her 60th birthday.
B. Her strong curiosity for fighting against aging.
C. Her eager interest in doing regular exercise.
D. Her urgent need to enhance her health and mind.
25. What do the underlined words “this principle” in paragraph 3 probably refer to
A. Setting a target time. B. Finding your limitation.
C. Enjoying your decisions. D. Running at your own pace.
26. What does the author think of peer pressure
A. Its impact is only limited to young generations.
B. Even senior citizens cannot avoid it completely.
C. Its existence is too ridiculous to explain.
D. It ends if we stop pursuing our dreams.
27. What might the author intend to convey through her experience
A. Look before you leap. B. Birds of a feather flock together.
C. It’s never old late to learn. D. Don’t follow the crowd.
C
When something on your fruit or vegetable looks strange, it isn't unusual to throw it to the side. without any hesitation. But some “unusual" parts of fruits and vegetables actually contain abundant amounts of health benefits or they may offer other little known uses. Those strings in your banana are no different.
Often thrown away with its skin, banana strings, which are scientifically called phloem bundles, are just as nutritious as the rest( inner part) of the fruit. They are packed full of fibre, vitamin A, and vitamin B6 and other nutritional content, Phloem can be found in all plants, which is responsible for the transport of nutrients.“ Phloem bundles are made up of living cells that send food products and sugar to all the different parts of the plant," says Rebecca Lee, a registered nurse and the founder of . And that is exactly what those strings do in the banana, transporting necessary nutrients throughout the delicious fruit so that it can grow up properly.
“They are not disgusting, and they just help the banana grow and become delicious," Dr. Elizabeth Trattner A. P. DOM, Doctor of Chinese and Integrative Medicine, told Reader's Digest. “It is fine to eat and although is structure is a little different from the inside.
Those phloem bundles can also be used to determine if your banana is ready to eat. If all of the nutrients haven't been transported completely in a balanced way throughout the fruit yet, then the phloem bundles stay on more tightly, meaning the banana is under ripe. Then the opposite occurs with ripe and over ripe bananas, as the strings can be removed more easily. But if your bananas do end up bring over-ripe. throw them away Absolutely not!
28. What are the strings of a banana
A. It’s nutrition producers. B. It’s transporting cells.
C. It’s fleshy inner parts. D. It’s protective skins.
29. What does the underlined phrase “the opposite" in the last paragraph refer to
A. The banana is not ripe enough. B. The phloem's structure is tight.
C. The nutrients are distributed fully. D. The phloem bundles become longer.
30. What does the author seem to discuss in the next paragraph
A. The ways to deal with over -ripe bananas. B. The reasons for bananas being over -ripe.
C. The steps of stopping bananas being ripe. D. The links between phloem and ripe bananas.
31. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A biology textbook. B. A research paper. C. A medical brochure. D. A health magazine.

Red pandas are native to the high forests of Asia. They are only a little bigger than a house cat and considered to be endangered.
Scientists reported last month that not all red pandas belong to the same species. There are two different species of this animal, not just one. The scientists reported finding major differences in three genetic markers between Chinese red pandas and Himalayan red pandas. Scientists identified the markers after studying DNA from 65 of the creatures. DNA carries genetic information for the development, growth and reproduction of living things. Documenting the existence of two separate species could help guide efforts for protecting red pandas.
Chinese red pandas live in northern Myanmar, as well as southeastern Tibet, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces in China. Himalayan red pandas are native to Nepal, India, Bhutan and southern Tibet in China. Conservation biologists Yibo Hu and Fuwen Wei led the study. Their findings were published in the journal Science Advances.
“To conserve the genetic uniqueness of the two species, we should avoid their interbreeding in captivity,” Hu said. “Interbreeding between species may harm the genetic adaptations already established for their local habitat environment.”
Scientists had earlier suggested there were two species of red panda. But the new study was the first to provide the genetic information necessary to permit such a judgment. International experts estimate a total population of around 10,000 red pandas in the wild. The two species differ in coloration and skull shape. The Himalayan red panda is the rarer of the two. Major threats to red pandas include deforestation and habitat loss.
While they have similar names, red pandas and giant pandas are not closely related. Giant pandas are one of the world's eight bear species. Red pandas are sometimes called living fossils because they have no close living relatives. They are the only remaining member of their mammalian family.
32. What does the second paragraph mainly deal with
A. Not all red pandas belong to the same species.
B. The major differences between the two species.
C. The difficulty in finding out genetic difference.
D. The significance for further research into pandas.
33. Where can Himalayan red pandas be found
A. Beoak. B. Yunnan province. C. Southeastern Tibet. D. Northern Myanmar.
34. What is Yibo Hu's attitude to interbreeding between species
A. Disapproval. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Unclear.
35. What can be said about the Himalayan red panda
A. People used to care little about it. B. Its living conditions are improving.
C. Habitat loss is a great threat to it. D. Its skull shapes are easy to distinguish.

Dear Jack,
I’m glad to hear that you are coming back home after the FISU World University Games held in Chengdu, Sichuan province. And you want to bring a few gifts for your mother that symbolize the Chinese culture.
In my opinion, you can buy the following two presents. First of all, cheongsam, a very beautiful traditional dress for
Chinese women, can show the real beauty of a woman, thus I am sure that your mother will like it very much. What’s more, the Chinese knot, which is pretty decoration popular with Chinese, is usually hung in the sitting room of our home. It
stands for unity and good luck. Meanwhile, I'm convinced that it will bring good luck and happiness to your family.
Have a good vacation and remember me to your mother.
Yours,

Even if you are registered for classes during the summer, you must leave this dorm by June 3 rd . If this poses a problem for you, you should contact my office as soon as possible. You should remember to turn in your room key before you leave. Failure to return your key can result in a $ 1 fine. You must also make sure that all of your personal property has been cleared out of your room. I will be passing out a form for you to fill out concerning the condition of your room. You should report on the form of any damage to your room which has occurred over the last year, such as holes in the room’s walls, doors or windows. That way our summer maintenance crew will know where to make repairs before the next school year starts. If you have any questions during the next few days, please ask your resident advisers or call my office. Now, please take one of the forms as they are passed around.
