I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal eggs and toast. Others had Cokes and candy for lunch, while I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We felt embarrassed because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9: 00 each night and up at 7: 45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break the Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us.
Through the years, our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would only be content with the black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout.
She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I’m now trying to bring up my three children. I’m filled with pride when my children think I’m mean because now I thank the meanest mother in the world every day.

A. The writer worked hard and usually got good grades in study.
B. The mother was punished for breaking the Child Labour Law.

Have you ever heard someone say, “you totally look like you’re a Jessica” or something similar People seem to think that they know what kind of person a “Jessica” or a “Michael” looks like. Why is this
According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, humans tend to associate people’s names with their appearance(外表), and can even’ guess someone’s name based on how they look.
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, collected thousands of photos of people’s faces. They labeled each photo with four names. Then, they asked volunteers to guess which of the four names was correct.
The volunteers were able to guess the right name 38 percent of the time. It seems that certain characteristics of faces give them clues about someone’s name, Reader’s Digest reported.
However, this only worked when the volunteers looked at names from their own culture. In addition, the volunteers were not as good at guessing the real names of people who used nicknames more often than their real names. This may show that a person’s appearance is affected by their name only if they use it often.
This kind of face-name matching happens “because of a process of self-fulfilling prophecy(自我实现预言), as we become what other people expect us to become.” Ruth Mayo from the university told science news website EurekAlert.
Earlier studies have shown that gender and race stereotypes(刻板印象) can affect a person’s appearance. The researchers believe there are also similar stereotypes about names. For example, people tend to think that men named Bob should have rounder faces because the word itself looks round. People may think that women named Rose are beautiful. They expect them to be “delicate” and “feminine(女性的)”, just like the flower they are named for.
12. What was the purpose of the study
A. To find out today’s most popular English names.
B. To learn how names influence personality.
C. To find out whether names relate to their looks.
D. To show how men’s names are different from women’s.
13. What does the underlined word “clues” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. lights. B. attentions. C. methods. D. hints.
14. According to Ruth Mayo, why do some people look like their names
A. They tend to become what others expect them to become.
B. They want to please everyone around them.
C. They don’t want to be different from others.
D. They like to copy famous people who share the same name.
15. What point does the last paragraph want to explain
A. Earlier studies about stereotypes are limited.
B. Stereotypes about names can bring good results.
C. Stereotypes about names can affect people’s looks.
D. It’s not always bad to be influenced by the expectations of others.
C 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第二自然段“According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, humans tend to associate people’s names with their appearance(外表), and can even’ guess someone’s name based on how they look. (根据发表在《个性与社会心理学杂志》上的一项研究,人类倾向于将人的名字与长相联系起来,甚至可以根据长相“猜出某人的名字”。)”可知,研究调查表明,人们趋向于将人的名字与长相联系起来,并且还根据名字去猜长相。因此做实验研究是为了确定名字是否与长相有关。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四自然段“The volunteers were able to guess the right name 38 percent of the time. (志愿者有38%的时间能够猜出正确的名字。)”可知,志愿者有38%的时间能够猜出正确的名字。结合划线部分所在句子“It seems that certain characteristics of faces give them clues about someone’s name, Reader’s Digest reported.(据《读者文摘》报道,人脸的某些特征似乎为他们提供了关于某人名字的clues。)” A. lights.
根据文章倒数第二段“This kind of face-name matching happens “because of a process of self-fulfilling prophecy(自我实现预言), as we become what other people expect us to become.” Ruth Mayo from the university told science news website EurekAlert. (这所大学的Ruth Mayo告诉科学新闻网站EurekAlert,“因为我们成为了别人期望我们成为的人,所以会有一个自我实现的预言过程。”)”可知,根据Ruth Mayo的说法,有些人看起来像他们的名字是因为他们往往会成为别人期望他们成为的样子。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“Earlier studies have shown that gender and race stereotypes(刻板印象) can affect a person’s appearance. The researchers believe there are also similar stereotypes about names. (早期的研究表明,性别和种族的刻板印象会影响一个人的长相。研究人员认为,人们对名字也有类似的刻板印象。)”可知,研究者也发现在姓名中也会有刻板印象的现象,所以最后一段想解释关于名字的刻板印象会影响人们的长相。故选C项。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

____20____
When the conflict is gathering pace and you can’t manage to control yourself, you should choose to handle the situation in another way. By all means, try to keep yourself away from stress. G 17. E 18. F 19. B 20. A
空前说“It is necessary to be reasonable and flexible enough to avoid conflicts as much as possible and live in peace with others.(要有足够的理性和灵活性,尽量避免冲突,与他人和平相处)”可知,本句应说为什么要避免冲突,G选项“争吵要么会破坏你们的友谊,要么会在某种程度上影响你们的关系”说明了为什么要避免冲突或争吵,因此G选项承接上文,符合语境,故选G。
空前说“Sometimes people can get in the center of conflicts due to their enthusiasm for offering help. Frankly speaking, it is very unwise, because it can make you the main figure of the conflict.(有时人们会因为提供帮助的热情而陷入冲突的中心。坦率地说,这是非常不明智的,因为它会使你成为冲突的主角)”可知,空格处应说正确的做法是什么,E选项“让别人在你不在场的情况下解决他们的问题”说明了正确的做法,也和后文的“You should focus on your own life issues.(你应该关注自己的生活问题)”相呼应,因此E选项承上启下,符合语境,故选E。
【18题详解】
本段小标题是“Be kind.(善良)”以及后文“Life is full of conflicts and disagreements, and that’s why you should find more conservative (保守的) ways of dealing with them. For example, kindness can lessen the conflict.(生活充满了冲突和分歧,这就是为什么你应该找到更保守的方法来处理它们保守的。例如,善良可以减少冲突)”可知,本段的建议是善待他人,故F选项“当有人把你逼到极限时,试着善待这个人”说明了要善良,对人好,和小标题相符合,故选F。
19题详解】
空前说“Peacekeepers tend to cooperate with people without bad emotions which usually lead to arguments and even conflicts.(维和人员倾向于与人合作,不带不良情绪,这通常会导致争吵甚至冲突。)”
根据本段内容“When the conflict is gathering pace and you can’t manage to control yourself, you should choose to handle the situation in another way. By all means, try to keep yourself away from stress. It is helpful to put some distance between yourself and the opponent (对手). You should get away from the situation for a while.(当冲突愈演愈烈而你又无法控制自己时,你应该选择用另一种方式来处理这种情况。无论如何,试着让自己远离压力。在你和对手之间保持一定距离是有帮助的。你应该暂时离开这种情况)”可知,这里作者建议要远离冲突,离开对手,A选项“走开”符合语境,故选A。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右.
Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
Paragraph 1:
Robert was fast sinking.

Paragraph 2:
ThusRobert’s life was saved.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and at the risk of drowning himself, he brought Robert to the shore.
Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed of having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.

Through the years our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing.

In fact, she doesn’t pay much attention to Alma at all, but on the night of the big performance, Madame comes down with illness. At last, Alma is given a chance to prove that it’s not an ordinary animal. Alma gets success.
The play is successful, because it attracts people who have ever longed for success and being focused on. Cats first opened in the West End in 1981 and then on Broadway(百老汇)in 1982. It won a lot of awards, including Best Musical at both the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards.

One actress, Marlene Danielle, performed in the Broadway production for its entire run from 1982 to 2000.
Since 2015, Cats has been the third longest running show in Broadway history from 1997 to 2006, surpassed only by The Phantom of the Opera and Chicago. Cats is the fourth longest running West End musical.
